Welcome to
TransformativeStory

Transformative storywork is a principle-based approach that includes a range of techniques, methods and structures to help people tell their own stories.

Over time, this can build relationships and understanding to make meaningful changes.

“Being part of the transformative storytelling [methodology] was much more than learning how to craft stories; it was about discovering 'me' and the power of narratives to inspire, connect and drive change.”

Joyce Akinyi Akach, University of Nairobi Lecturer, Creative Facilitation for Storytelling participant

“I feel transformed too – like something inside me has really shifted in terms of this story. And part of that is seeing my story in relation to everyone else’s. What I’m really interested in is how you capture that transformation – the transformation of your participants – in a research way. How do you report that?

How do you frame that as an outcome of the research?”

Online Guide

Stories are as different as the people telling them. They can be told in different formats, forms, and mediums.

Stories should reflect what the storyteller wants to express. Here are some examples that show a variety of stories, across contexts.

It is important to understand that the process for telling these stories has been tailored to the specific context, focus issue and group of storytellers. For each example, the approach used was based on the principles and elements of practice in this guide, but the process has varied significantly.
