Taster Course: Introduction to Video Storytelling
This taster course gives you an introduction to what it means to use video for storytelling through a range of practical and creative activities. Through an interactive small group or pair process, you will develop a short video profile story. You will learn the basic elements of how to produce your story digitally, combining visuals and a script into a short film. This course is designed for researchers, M&E practitioners, communication experts and consultants who have an interest in using storytelling in their work. No prior experience with storytelling is required.
This course will cover:
● The meanings of story and storytelling
● Creative ways to identify and develop a story
● Basic elements of good stories
● How to create a storyboard
● How to best frame your story
● How to use camera and audio most efficiently to tell your story
● How to use video affordably!
● How to use simple digital techniques to produce a story
Cost: £75

Facilitation: This course will be co-facilitated by Joanna Wheeler (storytelling process) and Ambika Samarthya-Howard (visualisation and video production). Ambika is a professional film-maker. Check out Ambika’s work here.
What is included: course materials, access to a secure platform for participating/sharing and connecting with others, one round of feedback on your story from facilitators with additional feedback from the participants, on-going membership in a network of others working with storytelling.
What you need: a working internet connection, a phone/tablet/computer capable of connecting to the internet, a private space from which to join the sessions, interest and willingness in exploring your own experiences and learning through a collective process. Prior experience with storytelling and or digital story production is not required.

The creative techqniues will be tailored to you and the group and will include visual, written, spoken and embodied forms of storytelling, via online platforms. You will learn to record and produce your own story. You will have the option to make a digital version of the story using open access or very low cost apps and software. At the end of the storytelling process, you will share your stories through a group screening. Finally you will have the opportunity to decide if and how you want to share your story beyond your storytelling group.
